The School Crosswalk Ahead sign may be used in advance of a school crossing except where the School Area sign (WC-1) is in place.

The right or left version is used as appropriate so that the pedestrian symbol on each sign is walking toward the centre of the road.

The color for the WC-1 and WC-16 warning signs has been changed to fluorescent yellow-green conforming to the requirements of ASTM E991 and ASTM E1247 for fluorescent materials and as described in the "Federal Highway Administration Federal Register/Vol.63 No.118, June 19, 1998 / Rules and Regulations".
