The Checkerboard sign indicates a "T" intersection in a road. It is applied where the driver cannot proceed either straight ahead or at the terminal point.

It should be located directly in line with the path of approaching vehicles on the road that forms the stem of the "T". It should be located on the far side of the intersecting road opposite the approaching driver.
